CDP 2018 Deadline Fast Approaching

22/06/18

Responding to Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an increasingly popular way for organisations to demonstrate their commitment and transparency when it comes to carbon reduction. CDP provides essential climate change data to the global market, particularly investors. This highlights the growing focus on sustainability issues from investors, stakeholders and purchasing organisations. Companies have increasing pressure to understand the impacts of their operations. Externally, stakeholders are looking for the confidence that organisations are managing the associated risk and opportunities.

The deadline for responses is 15 August for companies responding to their investors and 29 August for companies responding to their customers. Meeting these deadlines will ensure the organisation’s data is included in CDP’s online database.

Measurement and disclosure is a key step towards carbon management and reduction and the choice to perform third party verification/assurance on that data is a further step towards advancement on the path. Organisations can secure more CDP points by gaining independent verification of the data included in the questionnaire from an independent third party organisation.

Ultimately, higher data quality confirmed with independent third party verification adds an element of credibility, reliability and accuracy to the data with external stakeholders.

CDP’s New Approach for 2018

This year sees a number of significant changes associated with CDP disclosure. These changes will be seen within the questionnaire format and the scoring methodology. For 2018, organisations will witness the introduction of CDP’s new sector-based approach to environmental reporting, following calls for sector-based disclosure from investors to enable easier and more meaningful comparison of company progress.

These individual sectors are grouped into four groups – agriculture, energy, materials and transport. Organisations in high impact sectors will be asked to disclose further sector-specific information. In turn, CDP will report on specific sectors and focus on the performance metrics that have the most environmental impact.
